Who was Rosie Jimenez?

In 1977, Rosie Jimenez, the single mother of a five-year-old girl, discovered she was pregnant. Earlier that year, the U.S. House of Representatives had passed the Hyde Amendment, prohibiting the use of federal money for abortions. The denial of federal funds put abortion out of reach for thousands of women, like Rosie Jimenez, who relied on Medicaid for their health care needs. Rosie had just received a scholarship for college, but rather than use that money, she chose to have a less expensive back alley abortion. As a result, she died from a massive infection, her scholarship check still in her pocket. Forced to choose between a safe, legal abortion and her future, Rosie refused to give up her dreams of an education and a better life for herself and her daughter. It is in her memory that the Women's Medical Fund honors heroes in the effort to keep abortion accessible to all women.

NIGHTMARE ON AMERICAN STREET

Enter if you DARE! Nightmare on American Street will be a terrifying eye-opener, depicting the real hell of women in the US who simply wish to have a safe legal abortion.

While public attention has focused on the basic legality of abortion under Roe v. Wade, for thousands of poor women and rural women, Roe is nothing more than an empty promise.
